Wondering how to choose cannabis products when there’s so much on the shelf to sort through? Setting a goal first makes the whole process easier. Once you know what you’re hoping to feel (focused, relaxed, well-rested, or simply curious), it becomes much simpler to spot what fits your plans within each category.

Our cannabis product guide walks through a simple five-step process, so you can step up to the counter feeling ready, informed, and confident in what you’re buying.

Step 1: Define Your Goal

What are you trying to achieve with your cannabis purchase? Maybe you want to relax after work, use cannabis as a part of your sleep routine, or enhance creativity when hanging with friends? Some of our customers love to use cannabis in social settings, while others integrate it into their solo self-care routines.

Remember that goals can help in choosing the right cannabis, but there are no guarantees of specific results. Cannabis effects vary from person to person and can even change with your setting.

Step 2: Compare Formats

When comparing flower vs. edibles vs. vapes or other formats, think about three things:

  • Timing
  • Duration
  • Convenience

Flower and vapes are inhaled, so most people feel the effects quickly. That can make it easier to judge how the weed is affecting you and take breaks when needed. Flower can offer a much-loved ritual, while vapes are the mess-free way to inhale.

Edibles take longer to kick in because they have to go through your digestive system first. However, the effects can last a lot longer, too. Patience is key with edibles, because you don’t want to take too much too quickly.

Step 3: Consider THC and CBD Balance

The THC vs. CBD question is about balance. THC is intoxicating while CBD can produce some of the same effects without the high. Products that contain both can feel very different from THC-only products, but your experience may be different.

More THC doesn’t necessarily mean more effective. A product that’s too strong for your tolerance levels or situation can lead to an uncomfortable experience. Always start lower than you think you need and build up slowly.

Step 4: Factor in Terpene Profiles

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give cannabis its citrus, pine, floral, or gassy scents. Terpene profiles are a handy way to compare similar products and determine which flavors and aromas you love the most.

Remember that terpenes can influence the experience, but they aren’t a promise of a specific mood or effect.

Step 5: Ask Staff for a Recommendation

We never expect you to walk into a dispensary with everything figured out. There’s a lot of beginner information to know about cannabis and thousands of product options. All you need to do is tell a staff member what you want to experience and what formats you prefer, and from there, get recommendations to start. From there, you can compare products side by side and pick the ones you want to try next.
