Terpenes 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Cannabis Aromas & Effects

Posted on October 30th, 2025 to Cannabis 101 by

Terpenes are natural cannabis compounds. They’re responsible for the flavor and aroma of the plant. While terpenes don’t affect the potency of cannabis, they are essential for personalization. For some people, flavor and scent play a major role in shaping their desired effect.

At Hidden Grove, we emphasize weed experience components that may be secondary for some but primary for others. We created this terpene guide to help you make the most out of your cannabis journey.

What Are Terpenes?

Let’s start our beginner’s guide to terpenes by diving into the botanical definition and background of this important compound.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants (not just cannabis). They give fruits, herbs, and flowers their distinct scents. For example, they are responsible for the citrus scent of lemons and the pine scent of evergreens. In cannabis, terpenes are made in the same glands that produce THC and CBD.

Scientists have identified over 150 terpenes in cannabis. In addition to producing a special scent, some terpenes may also influence how cannabis makes you feel. For example, myrcene can have a relaxing effect, while limonene may improve your mood. (More on this later.)

Terpenes also work together with cannabinoids in what is known as the “entourage effect,” where these compounds interact to shape and potentially enhance the overall effects of cannabis.

Common Cannabis Terpenes and Their Profiles

You don’t have to be a cannabis guru to distinguish between terpenes. They all have distinct cannabis flavors and aromas, which you may love or hate. Some of the most common terpene profiles are:

1. Myrcene

Myrcene is one of the most common terpenes found in cannabis. It gives off an earthy scent with hints of delicious herbs. This terpene has the potential to provide a relaxation effect, so you can usually find it in indica strains. Myrcene may also help enhance the effects of THC. Many popular brands have products that contain this particular terpene.

2. Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene has a spicy and peppery scent, which is also found in black pepper and cloves. This particular terpene has a unique ability to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system directly.

3. Limonene

Limonene is easy to recognize thanks to its citrus aroma that immediately reminds you of lemons and oranges. It has the potential to improve your mood and boost your energy. Some research suggests it may also help reduce stress and anxiety. Strains rich in limonene are great for daytime use.

4. Pinene

Pinene smells like a pine forest. It can help with alertness and memory retention. Some consumers say it gives a clear-headed high because it reduces the unwanted side effects of THC. Pinene is common in both cannabis and many other herbs. The scent can be strong, so it may not always work for everyone.

5. Linalool

Linalool carries a floral lavender scent. It can provide calming and relaxing properties, which make it popular among people who suffer from insomnia. In addition to cannabis, linalool is also found in lavender and chamomile.

6. Terpinolene

Terpinolene has a sweet, herbal aroma with hints of both pine and citrus. While it’s less common than other terpenes, this terpene is highly appreciated for its energizing qualities. The fresh scent makes it great for vaporizers.

How to Choose Cannabis Based on Terpenes

Even if you already know how to choose cannabis based on the strain, understanding terpene effects can make your choice even more targeted. Here are a few tips:

  • Smell before you buy. Aroma can tell you a lot about terpene content. Trust your nose because it’s often the best indicator of what your body enjoys.
  • Match terpenes to your goals. Looking to relax after work? Try strains high in myrcene or linalool. Need focus or a creative boost? Go for limonene or terpinolene.
  • Start small. Every person reacts differently. Begin with small doses of a terpene-rich strain to see how your body responds. The scent is not a full indicator of the experience.
  • Keep a terpene journal. Write down the strain name, aroma, and how it made you feel. Over time, you’ll notice which terpenes give you your favorite effects.

At Hidden Grove, we have a wide selection of the most effective cannabis strains with your favorite terpenes. We love to have you visit our White River Junction dispensary and take a firsthand look.
